Biography
English born Allan Burgess trained at the Camberwell School of Art in London, where his teachers were Colin Pearson, Lucy Rie, Hans Coper and Bryan Newman, and he went on to study at the North Staffordshire Technical College 1968/69. In 1973 he and his wife Meg Burgess, established the Caeathro Pottery in North Wales, and Allan was head of the ceramics Department in Bolton College of Art.
Allan, Meg and their children came to Canada in 1982, settling in Comox, BC, setting up Little River Pottery.
Allan taught ceramics and fine art at North Island University from 1984 to 2018. As a teacher he would have brought with him a great deal of technical expertise, and English Modernist sensibilities. He founded the NIC's Professional Potter Advanced Diploma.
In 2018 he received the Nonny Milne Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Arts in Comox Valley. He is a long-standing member of Fired Up and is known for his elegant classic forms and surface applications.
