Biography

Gord was introduced to pottery at Chilliwack High School and found his lifelong passion. He was inspired by meeting Mick Henry when a teenager and was influenced by his work and the Leach/Hamada tradition.
After high school Gord attended the Kootenay School of the Arts studying under Walter Dexter. Classmates included Robin Righton, Linda Mackie, Ted Driediger and Geoff Searle. After graduation he apprenticed with Walter Dexter in Nelson.
Gord set up a studio in Yarrow in 1971 which he worked out of for over 25 years. He was creating cone 10 reduction functional ware during this time and sold his work at craft fairs in BC and Alberta. He also wholesaled to shops in the lower mainland and Victoria.
From 1978 -1981 he worked as a ceramics teaching assistant at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design with Tam Irving. In 1985 he spent a year in Australia working at various potteries. Gord was head of the ceramics department at Fraser Valley College from 1988-1995.
In 2001 Gord moved to Victoria. He worked out of Xchanges artist co-op, taking over the ceramics studio in 2003. He taught classes at Xchanges from 2003-2008.
In 2009 he set up a studio (OxPots) with former student Janet Bartz. There he created functional ware, electric fired until his death in late 2025.
